GUEST SPEAKER / PROGRAM: Dr. Elif E. Oker,  Medical Director for Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois, a division of Healthcare Service Corporation (HCSC)

Topic: Using Social Media for Issues, Reputation and Brand Management in a Large Corporate Environment: A Healthcare Perspective  

Dr. Oker, a veteran emergency medicine specialist, has served as assistant professor of Clinical Emergency Medicine at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) College of Medicine.  At Blue Cross Blue Shield, Dr. Oker is responsible for clinical strategy and innovation for the municipal accounts which include approximately 500,000 members. She also leads the clinical content integration strategy for HCSC's, social media team, a presence that includes nearly 100,000 Facebook fans and 7,000-plus Twitter followers.

She is a contributing healthcare blogger and medical expert on Sharecare.com, an innovative online social media forum.   Dr. Oker has provided medical perspective to audiences on news media outlets, including XM satellite radio, WRCR-AM New York and WBBM-Chicago, along with numerous publications.  She speaks extensively on health care issues at venues ranging from the Chicago Bar Association, the Illinois Biotechnology Industry Organization, the Chicago Health Executives Forum, and Health 2.0 Chicago.

As a member of the board of directors of the non-profit WorldChicago, she works closely with U.S. State Department-sponsored programs to host diplomatic missions highlighting Chicago's place as a global center for business, culture, arts, and innovation. Dr. Oker is also on the Steering Committee for the Chicago Clinical Research Exchange (CCRE), where she supports and directs the development of an innovative research incubator at the Chicago Center for Healthcare Innovation.  CCRE will focus on innovative research questions including mHealth solutions as well as traditional clinical trials. A graduate of the University of Michigan's combined undergraduate-medical school program, Dr. Oker is also fellowship-trained in Toxicology and is a Fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians (FACEP).

GUEST SPEAKER / PROGRAM:  Dr. Hande Ozdinler

Topic: Understanding the basis and impact of recent political developments in Turkey

Dr. Hande Ozdinler is a member of the International Press Club of Chicago and has been an international press member since 2001, affiliated with Cumhuriyet Newspaper in Turkey.  In addition to directing one of two major ALS research labs at Northwestern University, Dr. Ozdinler publishes on science, technology, education, and women rights issues. She was also a columnist for the Turkish Journal for over two years.  

Dr. Ozdinler is of Turkish origin and has been closely following the recent unrest and Istanbul Gezi Park events in Turkey, as she spent her childhood in Gezi Park and is one of the members of the Chicago Turkish Forum.  She is an avid supporter of science and technology-driven freethinking and believes that current events give us hope for the future. In addition to being a scientist and an international press member, Dr. Ozdinler is a writer, photographer and a mother.  Dr. Ozdinler's work has been featured at Forbes, Harvard Business Review-TR and her scientific discoveries were recently covered by WGN-Chicago.

This September we start our landmark initiative, Diplomatic Series, by which the International Press Club of Chicago highlights a different country via our website and through our monthly Diplomatic Guest Speaker programs.  We pursue our goal which is to encourage everyone experiences their own personal international journey by participating in these programs and sampling the sights, sounds, and even the flavors of each new and exciting guest country!

We are proud and excited to announce that the first country in our series will be Turkey and the Consul General Hon. Fatih Yildiz will be our Guest Speaker!

The event will take place at the Consulate General of the Republic of Turkey. We look forward to seeing you as the Consul General enlightens the audience about the unique position which Turkey enjoys as a secular and predominantly Muslim country in such a dynamic region. He will also share certain elements of Turkish Foreign Policy unfolding in a rapidly changing political environment.  A Turkish Buffet lunch and soft drinks will be served prior to the program.

Topic: Journey Into Darkness

This is a serious study of the forces and motivations which contributed to the rise of  a totalitarian dictatorship in Germany. Dr. Lowell W. Culver, now retired from active university teaching, has followed political developments in Germany for over half a century. He was a Fulbright scholar at the University of Hamburg and later a Fulbright exchange professor at the University of Oldenburg, and has authored a number of articles and conference papers on German politics. His book, The Road to Democracy in Germany: The Role of State and National Elections, 1946-2012, was published by the University Press of America in 2012. He is a member of the Chicago-Hamburg Sister Cities Committee, for which he has organized a series of student exchanges between Chicago and Hamburg. He holds a doctorate in Political Science from the University of Southern California and shares time between the United States and Germany with his German wife.

Just for you, your friends and colleagues; this month the guest speaker, Chris Robling is a public affairs professional with experience in media, government, and agency public relations. He has spoken professional audiences in the U.S., France, Sweden, and Belgium. Robling work as an all-news radio anchor received the prestigious Peter Lisagor Award from the Chicago Headline Club. Robling provided training in communications to Russian audiences in Moscow, St. Petersburg and Arkhangelsk in the mid-1990s, funded by U.S. AID.

Businesses and organizations are becoming more reliant upon their presence on multiple social networking sites, such as Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn.  Social Media has proven necessary to tap into a demographic of a much younger population. To ensure that institutes and industries continue to thrive; they are each finding their niche in Social Media marketing as it relates to their individual businesses or organizations.   

Veronica Vera is a Chicago native that has worked in communications since 2007 providing communications support to small start-up businesses. She offers common sense political analysis for common sense people via blog posts on her website and live tweets national political debates and events for WBEZ in Chicago.  

Veronica is a veteran of the United States Air Force and is a graduate of Chicago State University with a degree in Communications and Public Relations.

Topic: A Life of Being, Having and Doing Enough

All the way from Santa Fe, New Mexico, Wayne Muller arrives in Chicago to speak to you at the IPCC's April 2013 Luncheon. Wayne is an executive leadership mentor. He is a therapist, minister, community advocate, consultant, public speaker, and bestselling author. A graduate of Harvard Divinity School, Wayne spent the last thirty-five years helping people triumph over adversity, through sorrow and joy, suffering and deep contentment. He is the founder of Bread for the Journey - a network of ordinary people engaging in grassroots, neighborhood philanthropy. He was a Senior Scholar at the Fetzer Institute, Extended Faculty at the Institute of Noetic Sciences, he also received several awards for his work with those in need. Most recently, Wayne co-founded The Institute of the Southwest along with his wife and colleague Kelly Wendorf. The Institute is an elegantly simple, successful leadership training center. It works with select individuals and groups liberating wisdom, collaboration, skillful leadership and sustainable, fruitful, personal and organizational change.

Dan Proft is an entrepreneur, writer, former candidate for Governor, and radio talk show host for WLS in Chicago, where he co-hosts a show from 5:00 a.m. to 9:00 a.m. each morning with Bruce Wolf. Additionally, Proft works as a Senior Fellow at the Illinois Policy Institute, a free market think tank in Chicago, Proft also serves on the boards of directors for both the Disabled Patriot Fund, a non-profit that provides assistance to Illinois military families, and Freedom to Learn-Illinois, a non-profit that provides private elementary school scholarships to disadvantaged children in Chicago, Most importantly, Proft is an aspiring basketball coach. Proft earned his BA from Northwestern University and his JD from Loyola University-Chicago School of Law. He is also the author of Legacy of the Heart, a New York Times bestseller, and How, Then, Shall We Live?

PROGRAM:  This is our first Membership meeting of 2013 to welcome in the new IPCC Officers.  We are requesting that each of you reach out and connect with others. This is the time of year to foster old and new relations. It would be appreciated if you would extend this invitation to include friends, family and colleagues as you help lead the charge to ensure the success of our club and all future endeavors. This will be a business meeting and fresh ideas are welcome.

Additionally, we are pleased to return to the Union League Club for 2013.
